The UNESCO-Japan Prize forEducation for sustainable development, funded by the Government of Japan, consists of three annual prizes of $ 50 each. It was awarded for the first time by the Director-General of UNESCO in November 000.
Award winners recognize the role of education in connecting the social, economic, cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The Prize was created by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 195th session as part of the Global action program for ESD, and officially announced at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD (November 10-12, 2014, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan). The Comprehensive Platform for Action calls for scaling up action on ESD at all levels as a means of implementing all of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Following the 207 EX / Decision 10.III.B of the Executive Board of UNESCO in November 2019, from 2020 the Prize has been renewed. In this new cycle, over the period 2020-2025, it will be given once every two years (2021, 2023 and 2025).
